For just over ten years between 2000 and 2011 I worked for South Holland District Council and if ever I went away to a meeting or a conference and introduced myself I almost always had to explain to at least one person that this was in Lincolnshire in the UK and not in the Netherlands. It seemed appropriate therefore that a year after leaving employment there that I and my regular travelling companions (also all ex-South Holland) should visit the country after which our region was named and whose symbol is the tulip.

I did the P&O Bilbao run (one way not a cruise) at one point on my travels and there were loads of people ‘cruising’. All seemed a bit pointless to me as they barely got any time in Bilbao, doubt they would have had chance to wander around the art gallery. I did get some food chucked in with the ticket though, and it was pretty decent. I was surprised.

We used to do the booze cruises from Ramsgate to Dunkirk with the Sally Line, too short a crossing to need a cabin, but the all you can eat buffet was fantastic.

Nice to share a different adventure with you. We did freezing fog Dover to Ostende one November- not the same thing at all, but I remember ferrying South Shields to Denmark with a fair degree of success.
