It was slow progress out of Rotterdam on account of the rush hour traffic and Jonathan soon became drowsy and dropped off to sleep and while he dozed my thoughts went back to our previous visit in a very cold February 2004.
That had been our very first Ryanair flight and on that occasion we stayed in the capital at the Hotel Amsterdam on Damrak, right in the city centre and I inappropriately introduced him to the Red light District and because of the weather and the need to be indoors we visited some of the city museums.
I agree that the Van Gogh can be a bit hit or miss, depending on the temporary exhibition that’s on display.
There’s a fine collection of Vincent’s work in the Kroller-Muller museum in the Veluwe National Park, a day trip out of Amsterdam. They also have a superb sculpture garden there.
And I do like the Rembrandt House. Small, but well reconstructed.

Your comment about the Van Gogh Museum reminds me of our visit to Madrid’s Prado Gallery where the Goya works I had wanted see where on a travelling exhibition in the USA!

In 2011 I visited Castres in France and the Goya Museum – I had no idea that there was a Goya museum in Castres – and there was a temporary exhibition of the ‘Disasters of War’. This was great for me but someone somewhere else would have been disappointed when they turned up to see them and found them out on temporary loan.
I think we can be reasonably certain that the Elgin Marbles will not go out on loan to Athens!

Next time you get the ferry, I’d recommend the brasserie restaurant – the prices are not too bad and the portions are massive!

I’ll remember that – thanks! I was going to go next week but in view of the weather I have reconsidered…

I’m heading there this spring for the first time and the Anne Frank house is on the list. Hopefully the lines won’t be too long. Her story astounds me and the ending is heartbreaking. So close to the end of the war.

We’re planning to spend a few nights in Amsterdam before we head to Prague to meet up with my hubby’s sisters. They want to explore the cities and towns along the Danube this year. We’ll be renting a car and driving around once we meet with them.
Thanks for the Posts on the Netherlands. The last time I was there it was in the 90’s.
