At the end of a visit to the slate mines in Blaenau Ffestiniog I bought this souvenir fire poker that had been made in the Blacksmith’s forge.

It reminded me of my days at school in the bottom form where we had lessons for the boys who were going to be working in factories quite soon and at which I was completely hopeless because the only things I ever completed were a wonky wooden tray with loose dovetail joints and a bent metal fire poker that was completely useless for its intended purpose unless you wanted to poke the fire from around corners.

  3. I’m quite taken with the idea of poking a fire from around the corner. It would perhaps be ideal for Dean Martin (I think) in the spoof spy films with a gun that shot round corners.

    This particular buy looks like the devil. No wonder it can stand the heat of the fire. 😀
