My thanks to Beth from ‘I didn’t have my glasses on’ to alerting me to the fact that in the USA 14th March is National Potato Chip Day.
Are they kidding!
Whilst I am prepared to concede that they know how to prepare French Fries in McDonalds and other similar places the bottom line is simply this – in North America they don’t even know what chips are, they think they come in a foil packet. Americans and Canadians please take note – these are not potato chips they are potato crisps!
These are chips…
I did some research on this recently…
hahahaha – i love this, andrew )

How about just plain salt?
As an American, I can further muddy the water with my opinion. .. fries are your chips, chips are real potato slices fried (Jays), crisps are made of potato mush, shaped like a chip (Pringles). 😉

More fascinating data – thank you! I had never heard of Jays. In Europe we have Lays but not in UK where they are branded as Walkers (crisps).

Haha very good post. What’s your thoughts on chips with curry sauce?

OK in an Indian restaurant but not in a bag from the chip shop!

So really it’s national crisp day LOL French Fries are far removed from the original potato. Dont they go through some mad process of frying, drying, adding a bucket of chemicals and then shaping them? Lets hear it for REAL CHIPS yes REAL REAL REAL I tell you LOL Nice one mate!

Good to read this post again, Andrew. Do we have an upcoming National Crisps day in the UK? I hope we do. I just wish they would bring back flavours like Worcester Sauce, Tomato Ketchup, and Branston Pickle.
You can’t beat the good old British Crisp as far as I’m concerned.

Hopefully Hugh, Walkers have stopped messing about with weird flavours and will concentrate on the classics. Do you remember Smiths crisps with the little blue bag of salt? It was a good idea but impossible to get an even distribution, inevitably some would get none and others would get a full adult recommended weekly dose.
I came across this earlier – http://www.boredpanda.com/unusual-potato-chips-flavors/

I do remember them, Andrew. Dare I say (and you may not like this) that I would sometimes add vinegar to them as well 😀
I don’t know why when I could have easily just bought a packet of salt and vinegar.

I used to get a bag as a treat when I visited my grandparents. Probably just my imagination but there used to be a great deal more crisps in a packet 50 years ago.

Just like Wagon-Wheels were a lot bigger years ago, Andrew. It’s the suppliers way of saving money and getting more money out of us.

Each to his own, Andrew 🙂 I’m feeling a little sorry for the Americans at the minute. What kind of rich, dangerous cowboy is Trump?

Ha! Actually the Belgium style chips are becoming more popular by the month! Stands are popping up all over town with huge assortments of sauces to put on top. Everyone’s walking around with these paper cones full of “chips”!

I will look out for them in Grimsby!

Haha I loved this post Andrew. As I recall it brought on the poutine discussion. Now where is that bag of chips, or crisps or whatever they are. 🙂

I didn’t mention poutine this time, I am still not absolutely certain that it isn’t a Canadian joke.
Welcome back by the way, I am looking forward to reading about your travel down-under!

Thanks Andrew! Yes lots of stories to come once we figure out what day it might actually be. 🙂 I think you may need to come to Canada for poutine research purposes!
