The custom of painting doors blue extends across Europe and beyond and is common across the entire world.
Even today in provinces of Spain buildings are decorated with blue bands and designs, houses in Egypt, in the Arab villages of Israel, and entire villages in Morocco, have blue walls. The same colour decorates the houses of Mexican Indians and in the United States the Amish in Pennsylvania paint their doors blue because, just as in Greece, many folk magic traditions and customs maintain that a witch cannot cross a blue threshold and according to such belief, a blue door is an effective barrier against evil, much like laying a broom across the thresh hold, putting salt on the windowsills or a hanging a horseshoe above the door.
More Doors…
I do love these blue doors Andrew. I see by my prior comment that I was intending to paint my door blue to ward off the witches. I shall have to get Dave right on that. 🙂

I used to think that Greeks had the best blue doors but Morocco beats them hands down!

I had them in my garden and like them too, but they reseeded all over the lawn and whatnot. They liked taking over. I also like wild blue bells (I believe that’s what they’re called).

These must be a wonderful accent against your house as background. 🙂

My favorite doors are the ones that are weathered, with the paint partially worn off. Makes me wonder what those doors have seen over the years – they must have their own stories to tell!

I commented before on your blue door collection, Andrew… anything that will keep the witches out of my house. They keep knocking things over with their broomsticks. –Curt

Gorgeous photos of the blue doors . You must have a wonderful collection. Noticed you said here you have some in your garden! Have you any photos of them? Also the forgetmenot flowers. They overflow in our garden and I have to eliminate them before they take over but they are a delight. Some came up pink this year. I don’t know how usual that is ?
