Every now and again you write a post and you think “That is a good one” you think “I am going to be busy dealing with responses to this one” and then no one stops by to read it, comment on it or even just press the like button in passing.

I have far fewer readers than you (1649 or so follows), yet I run into similar responses. Sometimes the simplest posts I do get the biggest responses, while ones I think are spectacularly brilliant, once in a lifetime brilliant, fall flat. LOL! I’ve given up trying to figure out why, and just let the muse guide me wherever it takes me. In consequence, I have average reader responses, which I enjoy because they rarely overwhelm me by volume.
Incidentally, I thoroughly enjoy your postings, whether I comment or not. It’s always worth a stop and read. Always!

Hey, we bloggers need to know that! I feel your pain, so to speak, and will even lie about naming my cat Andy after you if it helps out! LOL! (Actually, he was named after the Apostle St. Andrew, patron saint of Scotland, but he isn’t any saint!)

I gave up quite some time ago trying to figure out how it works. Back in 2012 I had 1,000 followers and averaged 500 hits a day. I now have over 6,000 and get fewer than 350 a day. I now just carry on regardless and try to take no notice of the hits or responses.

I’ve already put a comment on your other post but just to say, you seem to have been taken off my list of people I’m following, as your Posts do not come to me now (I have just clicked on your URL to get these. You are in spam when I look but I shouldn’t have to do this, so if you missed my ‘likes’ and comments, blame WP. Yessiree, definiely something odd going on.

Odd, the more content I add the more the viewing statistics go down. I have a series of posts about Portugal coming up and then I may take Kim’s advice and do something more useful – digging, painting, mending fences etc.

I’m sometimes tempted to do other things with my time as well, Andrew. There certainly is no lack of things I love to do. Most of my posts take close to a day to produce when you throw in research, writing and photographs. Then there is the challenge of keeping up with my friends! I like it all, but there are the books I am supposed to be writing. –Curt

Good point Curt. We are moving house and that is taking a lot of my blogging time. We have only lived here for 6 years but I am astonished on how much stuff we have accumulated and parting with it is so difficult!

When Peggy and I were throwing things together a few weeks ago to meet the fire evacuation recommendations, the thought crossed my mind about what I would truly miss if our house was caught in the forest fire. That led me to thing that if it doesn’t burn, I am going to do a serious paring down of my ‘things.’ –Curt

As Curt said: there’s the thing about twiddling thumbs elsewhere. I’m finding that I’ve been far too busy to keep up with posting and following for much of the past year. I still TRY, but finding time to sit down at the computer gets a bit tough at times. I still try to hit the ‘like’ button when I can, but even that is beyond me at times. Just keep on doing what you’re doing and don’t let us slackers get you down. I do enjoy your posts whenever I can!

It’s hit and miss isn’t it. I don’t really care most of the time but occasionally am overwhelmed at the response while not usually expecting too much. Whatever about wordpress I find facebook unbelievable. Sometimes a post takes off on FB and gets a rather quiet response on wordpress.

I wonder if the amount of other blogs we follow impacts this. I get so many posts in my WP Reader these days it is hard to keep up. I sometimes wonder if WP includes them all. It could be that as the amount of WP blogs and blog topics increase, the less traffic individual blogs get. I’ve been noticing that blogs with thousands of followers don’t often get a lot of responses. P.S. I always enjoy your posts when I see them. 🙂

There may be a couple of things at play here . . .
1) it may depend on your interests. What I mean is that, for instance, as an engineer, I might put a lot of effort into a blog post about the history and workings of the slide rule. I pack it with all sorts of information, historical references, animations showing how the various scales work, etc. etc. Namely, a great, well-researched, well-crafted, and well-written foray into . . . a topic the majority of the population has no interest in. Two people read it and one bothers with a “like” (they probably didn’t actually read it; they just hit like out of habit).
2) Disgusted and now running behind on other projects, I post a quick photo of a cat sleeping . . . and I get 200 views, 175 likes, and 22 comments from people explaining how their cat sleeps the same way or looks like my cat (I don’t even have a cat), or they had a cat like that, or they want to murder a cat like that (that last one I have to watch; there are weird people out there). I, without thinking, found a common bond between myself and some folks I’ve never met (and in the case of that last guy, hopefully I’ll never meet).
3) I happen to coincide the publishing of my post with the same day as there is a terrorist attack in some major city, Trump announces he’s banning French Fries as unpatriotic, some dictator threatens to kill all the pigeons of the world, and MacDonald introduces the MacPizza in three different sizes and 25 different flavors. My post will go unnoticed for a few days and by then it will be old news and hence buried to the eyes of the world.
4) Or, and this is the likeliest scenario . . . people just want to mess with me.
Odd are any one of those is applicable to your situation.

Guilty as charged! 😦 Were you refering to your last post, Andrew? Sometimes I glance in the Reader and think I’ll come back to that when I have a minute, and then don’t. Can’t read everything, hon. Frustrating, I know! Moving house- ugh! Go and do some painting and decorating and you’ll soon be glad to get back to writing. Do you still do the photo books? 🙂 🙂

Ha Ha. Not pointing the finger at anyone just a general observation. Yes, moving house, can’t believe how much stuff we have accumulated in just six years. Still do the books but they have become a lot more expensive so not quite so many. Portugal is a definite, we took so many lovely pictures!

Just as a matter of interest, do you schedule your posts or publish them immediately? I only ask, as a number of posts I have published immediately seem to travel back in time and therefore end up way down the WP reader. When I check them, it says they were published at a time when I most certainly did not publish them.

Not sure how it all works to be honest! Perhaps people are busier on some days than others – I tend to have times when I just don’t have a spare second to do blog reading and then I try and do a big catch up. I also prefer to read posts properly rather than just click a quick “like” so rest assured that if I do “like” your post or comment I have certainly taken the time to read it all through!
