Thursday Doors- Bridlington Priory in Yorkshire

Bridlington Priory Door

In the days of its medieval glory, Bridlington Priory was one of the great monastic houses of England. Its wealth and possessions made it a key monastery in the North, one of the largest and richest of the Augustinian order.

The Priory is just a church now and a fraction of its previous size courtesy of Henry VIII.  In 1537 he insisted that it should be demolished to remove the potential Catholic pilgrimage site of Saint John of Bridlington who enjoyed a reputation for great holiness and for miraculous powers and was the last English saint to be canonised before the English Reformation.

  1. Bridlington! There’s a name which conjures memories of when I got snowed in at a client’s offices. Never visited its Priory so missed seeing its handsome doors.

  2. We were told at Lincoln that the decoration on that type of door is a stylised “Tree of Life” representing Jesus’ family tree going back to Jesse the father of David. Whatever the case, I suppose it must strengthen the door.

  3. I genuinely hadn’t heard of Bridlington Priory which is odd given my interests, and the fact that for the first 18 years of my life it was right on my doorstep pretty much. Learn something new everyday… thank you!
