The next morning, the night after the cyclone, we opened the shutters of the room and looked out into the storm battered streets Alghero looked rather damp, drenched, soggy and windswept, forlorn and feeling rather sorry for itself…

Ah, Ichnusa, I remember it well! I also remember discovering two fabulous wines in Alghero, both, I think, from the same local winery – they were Cannonau and Cagnulari. Cagnulari was a magnificent specimen. The winery had a stall in the market, from which I tried to get a dozen bottles sent home, but the shipping costs were prohibitive. To this day, I’ve never seen Cagnulari in the UK.
