A Mysterious Loss

Just over fifty  years ago when I was about fifteen I bought a fascinating book called ‘The Reader’s Digest Book of Strange Stories and Amazing Facts’.

The book was an almanac of random stories and unlikely mysteries with tales of the supernatural, mythical beasts, feats of improbable strength, a glimpse into the future and it was divided into chapters such as “Strange customs and superstitions”, “Hoaxes, frauds and forgeries” and “Eccentrics and prophecies.”

I mention this because the weather has improved sufficiently to resume walking across the footpaths around the village where I live.  A day or so ago we were in the fields quite a long way from any houses or roads and this caught my eye propped up against a gatepost.

It wasn’t dumped, it was in excellent condition.  How, I wondered did someone manage to walk into the countryside with the help of a crutch and then lose it?  How did they get home again?  Did they meet a Saint who performed an unlikely  miracle?

  2. OK… that is VERY odd. As you say, someone may have walked there and then dumped it, in which case, how? Why? Either that or it’s a case of very selective – and small scale – fly-tipping.

  3. Someone who is on the mend but needed the crutch for confidence? S/he put it down to open the gate and then forgot to take it with them?

  5. Sounds like another case of alien abduction to me. The Cleethorpes Triangle strikes again!

  6. I famously leave walking poles everywhere, but I’d have thought a crutch was a bit different. Very curious.

  8. Very funny! Did you see anybody hopping whilst on your walk? That book sounds brilliant for a boy to read.

  10. Jesus stopped by, touched the lame fellow, who proclaimed “It’s a miracle! I can walk!”. He placed the crutch against the tree and hopscotched off to the local pub to tell his tale. Maybe not. LOL! It is very curious.

  12. There is definitely a story there! I would like to think someone stopped there to rest or pick a flower, and decided they could go on without it. To leave it for someone else who might need it.

  13. Very odd! I have a pair of crutches in the hall cupboard which I hope I never need to use again. By the time you’re on one you are well on the mend so I suppose it is possible someone just forgot about it.

  14. Alien abduction as mentioned by John seems the most viable reason to me…
