As always, fun tales packed full of interesting history and insights, Andrew. You noted that the Dun Cow plays a part in several English folklore tales.. Any guesses as to why?
Your story reminded me of Roger Whittaker’s song “I’ve got to leave old Durham Town,” which I had memorized in the 1970s along with “Good Morning Starshine.”
Durham has never been surpassed as my favourite cathedral. The view of it from the train is stunning and always said “nearly home” to me when I was young.
It is spectacular as too is Lincoln Cathedral perched high on an unlikely hill. Beverley Minster is another grand view when approaching the town in any direction.

Thanks Curt. The Dun Cow is a mythical giant beast that crops up quite regularly in UK.
