Streets of Naples

I visited Naples in April 2018.  Recently I was editing my pictures so thought that I might share these images of an exciting and eclectic city that I haven’t used before in my posts…

  1. Nice.

You have an empty photo in your gallery (shows up black) right before the skull.

  3. God only knows what those nudes are up to, although I did not realise that the masked dummy was a dummy. On the other hand, I’d definitely buy her pasta.

  9. An amazing city. I was there in 2001 and must go back. Arrived by train from Sorrento and left by ferry to Sicily. The station area is bonkers!

  12. Wish you hadn’t shown these pictures, I’m missing that part of Italy so much, the sleazy parts of the city, the noise, the even greater noise when the vespas all tune up when the offices close, the hawkers of fruit and vegetables, the street art, the pizzas and that frisson of danger that makes it such an exciting place to be in (or in which to be if we’re being formal)!

  16. Have you listened to neomelodica music Andrew, the new Neapolitan style sweeping S Italy. Closely linked with the Camorra and played on all its radio stations it has the Government so worried they are talking of banning it. Here’s a You Tube link – https://youtu.be/IgqT_y3eaPgg Main ‘enemy of the people’ and Camorra singer is one called Fiorello.

  17. I’ve just been reading an article Andrew, on the neomelodica music of Naples which is connected to the Camorra and which is growing at such a pace it’s got the government so worried it is talking about banning it – a surefire way to make it more popular. I was so intrigued I looked it up on You Tube – here’s a link if you want to listen – apparently it praises the Camorra, drugs and violence but without knowing the language well …

  18. Apologies, Andrew, first for the 2 comments, a mistake as WP didn’t upload the first comment (I don’t know when it appeared) and I didn’t realize the link would actually come out like this. You can delete it from your end, I can’t from here, and delete one of the comments – both if you wish – to clear your site.

  23. These photos are wonderful, Andrew. I love how you describe the city, too. It makes me want to be there. Italy is certainly a country that requires multiple visits. I never even got close to Naples.

  24. Oh what a lovely thing to happen. You liked my comment on Derrick’s post, I followed you back to your blog, and tumbled into this post about one of the most brilliant cities in Italy. How I wish that I had gone there sooner, but maybe I wasn’t quite ready for that crazy, wonderful, warm, chaotic city earlier. I am so jealous that you be there again, soon, and dead jealous about the cost of the flight. have a splendid time there. Where will you stay? ❤

    • Naples is fabulous, I always stay as close to the centre as possible. Naples is no more dangerous than any big city. Palermo and Bari are similar. I want to go to Marseilles but haven’t got there yet.

      • Agree, absolutely. Palermo is wonderful, edgy and fun. Marseilles ditto (but without the Italian vibe which makes Palermo & Naples nicer cities in which to wander – I think). Marseilles is like all the old black & white movies you’ve seen, with Gauloises-smoking taxi-drivers and furtive looking black-suited men standing in groups around the port.

      • Now I know for sure that I need to go there.
“On a morning from a Bogart movie, in a country where they turn back time, you go through the streets like Peter Lorre contemplating a crime” – Al Stewart, Year of the Cat. One of my all time favourites.

  25. You’ve just sent me to my copy which I haven’t listened to in years. Ah, happy days! Back in 2014, this was my take on Marseilles but I was only there for two days, much of which we spent in eating!
