Condolences on the loss of your Queen, Andrew. It is staggering to realize most people alive today can’t remember a time in their life Eizabeth II wasn’t Queen.
Your invitation to the Queen’s garden party reminiscence was a fascinating look at that tradition that I was aware of but had never read an account of that defined the size of the event. I live in a town that is barely more populated than the garden party attendees the time you went!

My earliest memory of the queen is as a small child watching her coronation on a neighbours tiny television set.
A couple of years later she visited Leeds. My mum bought me a Union Jack which I waved as we stood at the side of the canal and watched her barge glide past.
This past year has been similar to waiting for the death of a loved elderly parent, you know it’s coming, but you dread the day.
And now it’s happened and my family and I grieve just as if she really was our much loved parent.

A day to remember, Andrew, as was yesterday. She was a lovely lass, wasn’t she?
An amazing night here in Tavira too. Mariza was on stage in the Praca da Republica, a free concert, and she was sensational. Still singing her heart out after midnight. Enjoy your trip to Portugal!

Well, aren’t you quite the fine fellah, Andrew, to be part of a select band – and it IS select, even with several thousand people per party. I don’t know anyone else who’s had an invitation. I suspect this tradition is one whose moment will have passed, so treasure the memories.

Thanks Margaret, it was a great day. At one point she stopped to talk to a man who had been selected from the crowd to meet her. She was so close I could have reached out and tapped her on the shoulder. I didn’t of course.

Shame she didn’t make a century. Goes to show that best medical support available doesn’t always help. My Mother-in Law is nearly 99 and has only ever relied on NHS.

I’m not a Royalist, but have great admiration for Queen Elizabeth as she carried out her work. Her coronation was just a few months before I was born so it feels almost like losing someone I knew. What a week. New monarch and new PM.

Like Jeremy Corbyn, I’ll probably never get an invite either ha. I think it’s amazing you received this once in a lifetime invite and I’m so happy for you that you have this wonderful personal memory to look back on.

A lovely memory . Sadly, I only met her watching her drive or walk past . As a child I was small and so was she – I could hardly see her . Then in 1977 for the silver jubilee she went to so many places and it was said the cavalcade would slow if people had gathered . We stood beside the road – Frenchay to Filton in Bristol . One other family besides us . Seven people on the side of the road . And they slowed to 5 miles an hour . She beamed and smiled at us. Actually,my father almost thought she might stop. Again in Plymouth years later we were right in front of her car as it turned off the Hoe at crawling speed and once again she smiled right at me.
