Sicily – I like a Kettle but Kim prefers a Washing Line

When travelling to Europe We have given up on hotels and preferred instead to stay in apartments.  They are generally cheaper, offer more space and are chock full of facilities.

I especially like that they have a separate bedroom from the kitchen and living accommodation because I generally wake first , sometimes over an hour or so before Kim and in a hotel room I am reluctant to get up and make a cup of tea for fear of disturbing here.  Many hotels in Europe don’t even have tea making facilities, so there is another consideration but in an apartment there is always a separate kitchen and a kettle.

The apartment  in Ortigia was brilliant for this even though I felt a little guilty that this was suitable family rooms converted to tourist accommodation.  A different debate that I won’t go into here.

Anyway, to get to the point, Kim especially likes washing machines and if the apartment has one makes a point of washing our clothes and hanging them out to dry in the Mediterranean way even if they don’t really need it.

  1. I’m glad you find a kettle. There still seem to be parts of Europe where kettles aren’t a thing. Or plugs for the washbasin.

  2. I love staying in apartments in Italy. Every washing machine posed its own challenges!

  3. Preaching to the converted here bud – the equation of space versus cost usually pushes overpriced hotels right off the agenda

  4. Here in Australia there is a growing trend for house sitting. Let’s say that you want to go to Ireland for a week and you advertise in the right website and someone in Ireland want to have a holiday in your area then you organise a swap. My daughter has a friend who goes to Queensland from Victoria for two months every year and a couple in Queensland come down to Victoria for two months. It started by advertising in some particular newsletter ten years ago and they are now best of friends. Travel and food is all it costs.

  6. I do like to saunter down for a hotel breakfast and feel a little indulged at times, Andrew. If I’m washing and making breakfast it doesn’t feel so much a holiday. But I do agree about the kettle and a bit of space 🤗💗

  8. I need a kettle for my afternoon cup of tea. Hotels seem happy to provide coffee machine but not kettles so I have my small travel kettle (and tea) just in case!

  9. Those crank-out washing lines make street art that I think is a happy part of the experience in Italian cities!

  10. I’m like Jo, although we usually opt for a holiday cottage in the UK we’ve often stayed in hotels overseas (mainly because I used to travel with the OH for conferences). I don’t mind making breakfast, but like to have the luxury of eating out in the evening otherwise it’s not a proper holiday for me. Washing can usually wait until we are back home!

  11. I’m with you both – go to have a kettle, and a washing machine means you can travel lighter.

  12. I agree. I hate making tea in a coffee machine as the tea always tastes like coffee, yuk! I stayed at a very expensive hotel in Toronto (not my choice) and there wasn’t a kettle! Go figure.

  13. Shades of my childhood when I think of laundry drying out on the line Andrew. Not at all common in the US. I do, however, get to dry my clothes on a line when backpacking, or a rock, or a bush…

  14. The availability of what you want being where you want it is one of the charms of staying at home. A skill which I am perfecting as I grow older.

  15. I agree, more hotel rooms should have tea facilities. It really depends on the country you go to. Hotel rooms in the UK all have tea facilities, of course 🙂

  20. It’s hard to choose … I like both a kettle and washing machine (and washing line) in an apartment when we travel. However, I think my husband would like the kettle more 😉.
