Monday Washing Lines – Fes, Morocco

Welcome to my new project – Washing Lines

This one I spotted in the Moroccan city of Fes…

A sneaky picture this because people in Morocco don’t like having their picture taken. As we walked through the city Kim kept snapping away taking pictures of local people as they went about their business. She had to be quick however and mostly secretive about what she was doing.

This is something to do with being suspicious about having an image made of themselves and on most occasions when someone saw a camera pointed their way they would either turn away or wag a reproachful finger to say no.

Monday Washing Lines – Venice

Welcome to my latest theme. Monday Washing Lines.

This was spotted on a Gondola ride on the canals of Venice…

Good pegging out, all one colour which saves worrying about matching pegs to washing. Being slightly critical, I wouldn’t hang stripes next to spots and I would have hung the spotted pillow case next to the matching sheet, but that’s just me.

At water level there was a completely different perspective to the buildings and  here we could see the exposed brickwork and the crumbling pastel coloured stucco, sun blistered and frost picked and giving in to the constant assault of the waters of the lagoon as it gnaws and gouges its relentless way into the fabric of the buildings.

Monday Washing Lines – Villajoyosa in Spain

Welcome to my latest theme. Monday Washing Lines.

“They that wash on Monday have all the week to dry…”  – Victorian advice on housekeeping routines set in stone the idea that Monday should be wash-day, so that everything could be dried, pressed, aired and folded well before Sunday, the day of rest and clean clothes.

This impressive line of washing was in Villajoyosa near Alicante in Spain.  The woman has done a good job and has earned her siesta…

Monday Washing Lines – Alghero in Sardinia

Welcome to my latest theme. Monday Washing Lines.

This was a very windy day in Alghero in Sardinia…

…the next morning, the night after the cyclone,  when we opened the shutters of the room and looked out into the storm battered streets Alghero looked rather damp, drenched, soggy and windswept, forlorn and feeling rather sorry for itself…

Naples, Washing Lines

Naples Washing 1

I always wonder if they have ‘extra grip’ pegs in Southern Europe because if an unexpected gust of wind blows something off the line then it is surely gone forever.

This is rather like other unanswered questions that trouble me – why women are hopeless at supermarket check-outs, how did the Trojans fall for that Wooden Horse Trick, if moths only come out after dark why do they always fly to the light and just how can I be sure that the little light in the fridge has gone off when I shut the door?
